Basement Waterproofing

Basement waterproofing can save homeowners thousands of dollars in unnecessary repairs. Do you know what to look for?

How important is basement waterproofing?

Basement waterproofing is not a subject that comes up often. But if you own your home, it is subject that you should think about carefully. The truth is moisture, whether it is in large amounts or small, can ruin many of the structures that it comes in contact with. Cinder blocks, bricks, concrete or cement floors, wiring, pipes, and even your hot water heater are just some of the targets that water can attack and ruin.

Do you see mildew or mold on the walls or ceiling? Can you detect odors that remind you of mold? Is the paint peeling off the walls, floor, or ceiling? Peeling paint is often a sign that there is moisture behind the layers of paint. Can you see spots on the wall that look damp? Moisture can and will seep through most brick and cinder block walls. One important thing to look for is white patches that resemble chalk. This is a sure sign that your waterproof basement is not up to snuff. What this represents is a breakdown in the chemical bonding of the material and this can lead to complete deterioration if ignored.

You will certainly know that basement waterproofing is needed if you see rust. There does not need to be pools of moisture in order for rust to occur. High moisture content in the air is enough to cause rusting to begin.

Is waterproofing basements difficult or expensive?

The honest answer to that question is that it depends. Some moisture problems can be easily and affordable, while others may take much more effort and will, of course cost more in the long run. In some cases, waterproofing basements can be as simple as applying a sealer. In other case, you may need to replace windows or doors in order to prevent the moisture from getting in. Keep in mind that waterproofing basements is worth the cost.

Homeowners should also understand that proper basement waterproofing requires proper insulation. Insulation is very important to keeping moisture and condensation out. Much of this condensation is caused by changes in the temperature. When warm air meets cooler stone or metal, moisture will appear. And, as stated above, moisture will result mold, mildew, rust, etc.
