Basement Finishing or Basement Remodeling

Creating a new space in a basement is called basement finishing. Contractors may use studs and drywall to finish a basement. There are also complete finishing systems available to finish a basement.

Condensation

Water that collects as droplets on a cold surface when humid air is in contact with it. Condensation can cause mold and other problems.

Discharge Line

Used along with sump pump to carry water from the pump to the outside of the house.

Downspout Extension

This set up will allow your gutter downspouts to extend far enough away from the home so water does not puddle up against foundation which can cause serious damage.

Exterior Excavation

This is the process of waterproofing a home from the outside rather than the inside. It involves removing all the dirt around the foundation, thus exposing the footing of the foundation.

Many basement contractors excavate to add a sealant from outside of the basement or to install a drainage channel around to house.

Footing

The footing of the foundation is installed first. It prevents the home from sinking into the ground.

Mold

A fungus which grows on organic matter in moist conditions. Mold that is found in indoor air is a major health concern. Mold spores can be allergenic, causing irritation to eye, nose, throat, and lungs.

PVC Pipe

PVC stands for Polyvinyl Chloride. PVC is strong and will last a long time in cases. It is also very affordable when compared to other types of pipe.

Relative Humidity

The amount of water vapor that is in the air is also known as humidity. This vapor can produce moisture on all objects in the basement and thusly bring on rusting or mold. A dehumidifier is used to reduce the amount of moisture in the air. Ventilation is also a good way to reduce the humidity in a basement room.

Sump Pump

Designed to collect water from the drainage system and pump it out of the basement.

Vapor Barrier

A vapor barrier is any material, typically a plastic or foil sheet, that resists passage of moisture through wall, ceiling and floor assemblies of buildings. It helps prevent interior (or exterior) moisture from penetrating into and condensing in unheated attics, basements, crawlspaces, and wall cavities when there is a significant temperature different from inside to out.
